Characteristics related to biosafety
Betta splendens is native to mainland Southeast Asia, with its centre of origin considered to be in Thailand, particularly central Thailand and adjacent parts of the lower Mekong region. Wild populations occur within river systems of the region, while domestication of the species also originated in Thailand.
EN
The main centre of genetic diversity of wild Betta splendens is considered to occur within its native range in Thailand and the lower Mekong region. Wild populations in Thailand retain genetic diversity and population structure distinct from domesticated ornamental stocks. Extensive additional phenotypic and genetic diversity has arisen through long-term domestication and selective breeding, particularly in Thailand.
EN
Betta splendens is a tropical freshwater fish inhabiting shallow, slow-moving or standing waters, including floodplains, marshes, canals and rice paddies, as well as other vegetated freshwater habitats. It is adapted to waters that may have low dissolved oxygen concentrations through its facultative air-breathing capacity. Reported environmental conditions include temperatures of approximately 24–30 °C and pH 6.0–8.0.
EN
Native to Thailand and Cambodia and spanning to eastern Laos and Vietnam across the Mekong River. The species has also been found in Malaysia and Singapore systems as well as global captive-bred populations for fish trading and breeding systems.

  • The species has sexual dimorphism and possesses labyrinth organ allowing it to be an air-breather.
  • Multiple genomes of the species are sequenced.
